PTFE tape, also known as plumber's tape or thread seal tape, is commonly used for pipe linking in plumbing applications. It is a thin, white tape made from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a synthetic fluoropolymer. PTFE tape is highly resistant to heat, chemicals, and moisture, making it suitable for sealing pipe threads and preventing leaks.
When linking pipes using PTFE tape, the tape is wrapped around the male threads of a pipe fitting before it is screwed into a corresponding female fitting. The tape acts as a lubricant and creates a tight seal between the threads, preventing leaks.
Here are the steps to link pipes using PTFE tape:
    Prepare the threads: Ensure that the male and female pipe threads are clean and free of debris or old tape. Use a wire brush or cloth to clean the threads if necessary.
    Start wrapping the tape: Hold the end of the PTFE tape against the male threads of the pipe fitting. Wrap the tape clockwise around the threads, overlapping each layer slightly. For a watertight seal, wrap the tape around the threads 3-5 times.
    Apply tension: As you wrap the tape, apply slight tension to stretch it slightly. This helps create a tighter seal when the fitting is tightened.
    Wrap in the direction of installation: Remember to wrap the tape in the same direction as the pipe fitting will be turned when installing it. This prevents the tape from unraveling as you screw the fittings together.
    Complete the wrapping: Continue wrapping until you have covered the entire threaded section. Avoid overlapping the tape onto the pipe end, as this can cause blockages or interfere with the connection.
    Secure the end: Once you have wrapped the desired number of layers, tear or cut the tape and press it firmly against the threads to secure it.
    Install the fitting: Screw the pipe fitting with the PTFE tape into the corresponding female fitting, ensuring a snug fit. Avoid over-tightening, as it can damage the threads.
The PTFE tape acts as a barrier, filling gaps between the threads and preventing leaks. It also helps create a smoother connection and makes it easier to disassemble the fittings in the future if needed.Meanwhile,PTFE tape used for pipe linking is classified based on its density and thickness. The most common classifications are as follows:
    Standard Density: This type of PTFE tape is commonly used for general pipe linking applications. It has a density of around 0.35-0.5 g/cm³ and is available in various widths and lengths.
    High Density: High-density PTFE tape is denser than standard density tape, with a density of approximately 0.8-1.2 g/cm³. It is often used for applications requiring a stronger seal, such as in high-pressure or high-temperature environments.
    Extra Density/Extra Thick: Extra density or extra thick PTFE tape is thicker and denser than standard or high-density tape. It provides enhanced sealing properties and is suitable for applications involving rough or damaged threads.
    Color-Coded: Some manufacturers produce PTFE tape in different colors to indicate specific properties or applications. For example, yellow tape is commonly used for gas connections, while pink tape is designed for use with water systems.
